In my previous article (about the ePlan parts database) in my series on the database centric approach to CAD, I mentioned theePlan Data portal. It is a huge parts database with more than 780.000 parts from more than 210 producers (According to the data portal news), many of them leaders in their respective sectors. The database also keeps growing so each month you can expect new parts and/or producers. It is available to ePlan users under a separate license and permits the import of the needed parts directly into their projects and own Parts databases. After the import it is possible to modify the imported information to match our own necessities.
Our Internet portal for device data – the EPLAN Data Portal – supplies you with the master data of known manufacturers for the direct application to the EPLAN platform. In addition to alphanumeric parts data, among other information this master data also contains schematic macros, multilingual parts information, preview images, documents, etc.The data, supplied by the manufacturers, is. Eplan Data Portal Freeware BOLI Data Portal v.1.0 This project hosts the source code and keeps track of updates for software applications run through the Barcode of Life Initiative (BOLI) Data Portal.
The advantages of EPLAN Parts Database
The parts information from the ePlan data portal usually contain the following:
- The technical data
- Related function definition(s) and/or wiring (P8) macros
- Graphical macro (2D/3D)
- An image of the part
- Link to the manufacturers and/or part’s website or other documentation
As we can see, it can alleviate the work a lot, specially when we work with several different clients which have their own lists of preferred producers.. In this case the parts list can vary significantly from project to project. We all know what this means, no? (A lot of inefficiently spent time, of course).
I personally find ePlan data portal very useful in following use cases:
- Importing of new parts and producers into my own database.
- Using EPLAN Data Portal parts as templates for creating new parts, which are not existing yet in the system.
Where comes the data from?
The EPLAN Parts Database is not filled by ePlan itself, but by the parts manufacturers. So it is up to their choice which products they will insert in the parts database. It also means that:
- The Macros, Descriptions and other information should be the most exact and representative
- Sometimes it can happen, that not all information is filled according to ePlan guidelines/recommendations. The same can happen with the macros which can turn out to be less useful.
Regardless of time spent dealing with the little shortcoming mentioned above, the usage of the ePlan Data Portal turns out to be a big time saver.
Access to the ePlan parts database
The EPLAN Data Portal can be accessed through two ways. Directly visiting the URL: http://eplandata.de/portal/portal.php with a web browser or inside the ePlan software by clicking on:
Utilities>Data Portal
The search engine is very strong and it allows you to search and filter for parts by a wide range of criteria.
The other way to insert products into your project is to directly access the ePlan parts database from the Symbol/Function settings.
Direct import from the ePlan Parts Database into the project
In the tab Article, under the associated article list, we can find a drop-down menu, where we can choose our data source. And here we can choose to use directly the data portal database instead of our ePlan parts database. In this case the parts data will be imported directly from the ePlan database to the desired Function (project) and our local database.
A change to this setting remains saved, and has an implication on the option “Insert device” we find in the drop down menu we get by right-clicking on the drawing surface in the project. That means that we can also directly insert devices with parts data from the data portal into our schematics. Which is quite cool, no?
The other option to access the same functionality is via the main menu:
Insert > Device
Conclusion
The ePlan parts database is a useful service which can make you spare a lot of time. It has some little shortcomings we should keep in mind, but in the great picture it just serves to the purpose.
This is specially true if you are working in an environment that requires constant adaptation of your parts list to different requirements of eventual clients as in this circumstances your parts database continuously grows.
